October 12, 2009 - Bus Crash Kills Teacher, Injures Students
A bus carrying high school band members from Utah rolled on a highway in Idaho, killing a teacher and injuring more than a dozen students, police said.
The crash occurred Saturday night just outside McCammon, Idaho, when the bus driver, who survived, had a medical emergency that caused the crash, Idaho State Police Capt. Eric Dayley said.
Students were told the driver had a sudden stomachache that caused her to faint, The Salt Lake Tribune reported Sunday. Police declined to comment.
The bus was one of four in a caravan carrying members of the American Fork High School marching band home after winning a competition at Idaho State University, CNN reported Sunday.
Two students were airlifted to a hospital in Pocatello, Idaho, while another dozen were taken to the hospital by ambulance, The Tribune reported. None of the students had life-threatening injuries, Dayley said.
Heather Christensen, a woodwind teacher, was thrown through a window and died after she apparently tried to grab the steering wheel to keep the bus on the road, police said.
"She loved her students, they were her life," band leader John Miller said. "I know she died trying to save them."
