June 22, 2009 - At Least 2 Dead in D.C. Train Collision

Two passenger trains collided head-on in the Washington metro area Monday, killing at least two people, officials said.

District of Columbia Fire Department spokesman Alan Etter said several other passengers had been hurt in the 5 p.m. EDT accident between the Fort Totten and Takoma Park stations near the D.C.-Maryland line. It wasn't known how many were injured.

Etter called it a "mass casualty event," the Fox News station said.

Emergency crews were cutting apart the Metro red line trains to get victims out, he said.

News video of the crash scene showed one train on top of the other.

The cause of the accident had not been determined.
